Branding Boston Stump logo

It's not often that something that has existed for some time is not branded in some way. When that something is an extremely famous building it is even less likely... When that building is 700 years old it seems impossible that it has existed for such a long time without some kind of visual icon attributed to it.

It was therefore a delight and an honour to create the brand logo for St Botolphs Church - a building of great repute which has served the town of Boston as a land mark, a navigational positioning tool for seamen, an outstanding piece of architecture and a place of worship for so many generations.

Over the course of 2009, many celebratory events took place. In Sync Design worked with Peter Coleman, the chief fundraiser and public relations officer at the Stump to produce all the publicity material needed for the many exciting events.

See below for some of the work we produced.

The Time Line
Boston Timeline
The main focus of the exhibition was a time line which we designed to appeal to a diverse range of audiences. Rather than focus on the Church itself, we ensured that all elements of local life through the ages were covered to ensure that there was something for everyone.

The people through the ages
Boston Figures Boston Figures
Many of the famous people from boston are depicted within the Church either within the stained glass or as carvings. We selected six individuals each representing a century of history and photographed and enlarged them for display. To add to the visual element, we recorded people from the Church telling the stories of each. The recordings were connected to the cutouts and played once a button was pressed. This added immensely to the historical interest value of the exhibition and also added a feature for the blind or partially sighted to enjoy.

700 Years Events Boston Stumps Events Leaflet
Because the events leaflet was to be sent to many destinations both national and international and it was to be displayed in a raked display system, we wanted to produce a leaflet which would stand 'head & shoulders' above it's neighbours. We designed this leaflet to stand proud of it's competitors and also to be folded in a way that made it very practical for audiences to find out what was on during the time of their specific visit.

700 Years Flower Festival Flower Festival at St Botolphs Church
We chose to promote all events using a specific colour palette to aid the corporate style which identifying and drawing attention to individual events within the programme. Due to the diverse nature of the events, the palette acted as a visual touch-stone and helped the events to be psychologically linked.

Boston Stump Flower Festival DVD
One of the events was a Flower Festival which took place in June and attracted thousands of visitors from around the World. Four students from the University of Lincoln recorded the displays and worked to a very tight time scale prior to the exhibition opening. The DVD was then sold to the visitors and is still for sale in the Church shop and on their website. Thanks go to: Dan Hunter, Scott Farrow, Sam French & Mike Robertson.
